May is Maternal Mental Health Awareness Month! #MomsMatter

PPD Symptoms- #MomsMatter- Part 1

This month is Maternal Mental Health Awareness Month and we are recognizing that #MomsMatter!  And not only do moms matter, but their health and overall wellbeing matters too!  Which is why we are addressing the very difficult topic and conversation about Perinatal Mood Disorders which some may know as Postpartum Depression or PPD.

In a community of doulas, childbirth educators, sleep coaches, nurses, midwives, doctors, pediatricians, and real moms we are having real conversations that need to become a little more common, less taboo, so that we can take care of each other as needed.

I’m excited to get this conversation started with Evelyn Bussell of Felicity Birthing  , Jennifer Silliman of The Darkside of the Full Moon , and Chris Raines of UNC Perinatal Mood Disorder Clinic on the symptoms of Perinatal Mood Disorders, also known as Postpartum Depression or PPD.

If you or someone you know is experiencing any symptoms of any Perinatal Mood Disorders please reach out for support here.

A little more about my special guests:

A Raleigh native, Evelyn worked as a school librarian for a decade before becoming a mother. In addition to staying home with her rambunctious toddler, she supports expectant mothers and couples as a birth doula and childbirth educator. Her personal experience with Postpartum Depression, Anxiety and OCD have led her to raise awareness and educate others about Perinatal Mood and Anxiety Disorders.

Jennifer Silliman is the founder of momsTOmoms- South Florida and is co-producer of the documentary, Dark Side of the Full Moon. She earned her Bachelor of Science in Speech Communications in 2002 with concentrations in Broadcasting, Interpersonal Communication, as well as, Communication Theories and Cultural Studies. By day she works for Weight Watchers International.

Chris Raines works with the Perinatal Mood Disorder Clinic at UNC Hospitals. She is a dual trained women’s health and psych nurse practitioner and  works directly with moms and families experiencing Perinatal Mood Disorders.
