You Matter Monday Challenge #6: Dance It Out

What was your favorite show to watch growing up? For me it was Star Search with Ed McMahon.  As a little girl I spent hours dancing, singing, and performing.  I was always getting “4 stars”!  I loved it! It brought me such joy, and I just knew I’d spend the rest of my life dancing. I remember telling myself and others, “I’ll never stop dancing!”… and then I did.

Life happened; I “grew up;” and now as a mom I’m too exhausted to even think about dancing most days. Every now and then I wish I could go back to the time when I would stay out till wee hours of the morning and just dance, but the truth is all I want to do at night is sleep.

So it’s during the day now that I dance. I let myself forget how I’m “supposed” to behave, and I bring out that little girl who all she wants to do is dance. And I dance with the kids. We have our own version of Star Search and dance parties where we throw around scarves and everything. They get to see that yes indeed Mom’s still got some moves!

So today I encourage you to DANCE! Whether or not you think you can is irrelevant. Just DANCE!

And here’s why:

  • Dancing gets you moving, and it can be considered your workout.
  • You’re connecting with your kiddos.
  • You’ll be laughing and giggling.
  • You’re inviting your little ones into your world by sharing some of your favorite songs.
  • You’re showing your kiddos your moves – and they don’t judge.
  • They’ll love and appreciate your singing even if others don’t.
  • It lets you feel young again.

In my house one of our favorite jams to dance to is Frozen’s Let it Go. Best. Song. Ever. It’s a great reminder that when I’m trying to be a supermom, sometimes I just gotta “let it go!” It’s that gentle yet much needed reminder that it’s ok for me to let it go of “should” and just be present.

There’s no right or wrong way to have a dance party either. Sometimes we have a quick 1-2 song set, while other times we jam for 30 minutes. Whatever the day looks like, I make sure I find time to just be me and DANCE!

What did you do as a little girl that made you happy?  Were you a dancer? Singer? Performer? Deep down those desires are still there, so be the example for your babies, toddlers, preschoolers to stay true to who they are and what they love by doing what it is you love to do. There’s not greater gift than the gift of authenticity.

May you be the perfectly imperfect mom you were designed to be and remind yourself daily “Dance it out” when you need too.
